From May 15-19, the Pontifical Academy of Science is presenting a study week on the topic “Transgenic Plants for Food Security in the Context of Development.” Most of the speakers are internationally known as vehement supporters of agro-genetic engineering. Some of them are in close contact with genetic engineering companies or even work for these firms, such as, for instance, Eric Sachs of Monsanto, the worldwide biggest supplier of genetically modified seeds. So how did it come about that these supporters of genetic engineering are meeting in the Vatican?

Organization and leadership of these days of study is under the direction of Ingo Potrykus. He became famous as the inventor of “golden rice,” a genetically modified product that is supposed to counter a vitamin A deficiency. It recently made headlines in China and the USA as a result of questionable testing on children and adults. The majority of the board from the Golden Rice Project will now gather together there.

In November of 2000, Pope John Paul II spoke out against the release of GMOs. During a mass attended by approximately 50,000 farmers, the pope stated that the use of genetically modified plants to increase crop yields is against the will of God. But apparently, the Vatican has now changed its mind.

Toward the end of 2003, there was a conference at the Vatican on the topic of genetic engineering. It was organized by the “Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace.” Its president is known as a proponent of GM technology and during the conference he urged the use of genetically modified food to help find a solution to the world-hunger problem, which he called a paramount goal of the Vatican.

Of course, one question would be whether the Vatican would be willing to haul its gold bars out of the cellar and give them to the hungry. Then the people would have everything they need.

In any case, things have gone so far that the “Pontifical Academy of Sciences” invites supporters of genetic engineering from research and science to the Vatican gardens. This is a clear signal to the global public.

One solution to this dilemma would be to ask all GM proponents to eat only GM foods for 2 or 3 years. Perhaps then, we could see more clearly whether GM products are good for all people. Furthermore, most GMO proponents are Christian. And yet, we can read in the Bible, the following story of creation: “And God saw everything that he had made and behold, it was very good.” (Gen. 1:30.31) So, if it was good, why do we now have to improve it?

Can it be that genetic engineering is not meant to improve God’s creation, but to serve the profit drive of certain large companies? But then why is the Vatican now helping this effort?

Have you ever thought like me, to be the President. The idea came to me several times and people and friends asked me to apply. But I am a little short of the Office of the President of USA qualifications. In the past few years, some hundreds of people encouraged me to do just that.  

Will, I said: I wish, but it is impossible without changing the Constitution.  

But you are well qualified for the Office, you will be a great president. You are highly qualified, and  have I.Q. 147 score, much higher than many presidents. Take for example, President Barack Obama, he has I.Q. score of 127, and the previous one may have less.   

May be it’s  true, I replied. “But this is not enough. The Constitution is clear, even though not fair in this regard.

How’s that? People continue to ask.

It’s simple, I said: “The US Constitution, Article II, Section 1 reads: “No person except a natural born citizen, or a citizen of the United States, at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that office who shall not have attained to the age of thirty-five years, and been fourteen years a resident within the United States.”

Unfortunately I am a little short of these qualifications to be nominated for the Office of the President of the United States of America. The first qualification as you see, is unfair for millions of Americans  like myself, who were not natural born citizens, like the other millions who immigrated to this blessed country, and were  born not citizens at the time of the adoption of the constitution.  

One listener to my answer, said: But this is unfair in America, the dream land of liberty, freedom and equality.

Other person said: The constitution should be changed. We have to do something.

Others said: But this needs time and power to change the constitution. It may need generations to change it.

I said: No matter how long this will take, I think it is the right of all citizens of the United States to be qualified for the Office of the President. Because America is not  governed by one person, King or Queen. Or “the natural born citizen”. The idea should be the seeds for changing the Constitution, where every citizen (female and male) should look at and work for. If the nomination was nullified in my times, it should succeed in the future. Immigrants who are qualified for the Office of the United States should be equally treated as citizens.

It is my belief, that according to  human rights in a leading great democratic nation like America, every person, male or female should be qualified for the Office of the United States of America.

Suppose I was born  one day before becoming citizen with my family. Should I be disqualified for the Office of the President for that reason?

I represent millions of deprived persons from that honor, I strongly think, and strongly believe, this condition in the Constitution should disappear in the coming or next, or 2020, Presidential nominations.. There are  many immigrants who love America and defend American interests, learn and grew up in America, loved and married their girl, boy or same friends much more than the qualified natural born citizen President? The world economy as we know it is going down

As the 2007 economic collapse picks up speed, it’s time to take a hard look at the performance of the U.S. national political leadership in meeting some of their most fundamental responsibilities. It’s time to face the fact of serious failure over the last quarter century.

During this time, the leaders of both political parties and of major institutions such as the Federal Reserve have presided over the abandonment of some of the most solemn obligations of constitutional government. They have done this in order to embrace an agenda favorable mainly to the financial, corporate, and government elites.

On January 20, 1981, a full generation ago, President Ronald Reagan said in his first inaugural address, “Government is not a solution to our problem, government is the problem.”

Reagan was both right and wrong.

The problem the U.S. was facing then was the collapse of the nation’s manufacturing base through a recession that happened when the Federal Reserve raised interest rates to over the twenty percent level. It did so almost a decade after President Richard Nixon removed the gold peg for the dollar, leading to the inflation of the 1970s when our currency flooded world markets through the oil trade.

Reagan’s statement that “government is the problem” was correct to the extent that failed financial policies and the out-of-control actions of a Federal Reserve beholden to private financial interests combined in the worse economic downturn since the Great Depression to wreck the world’s greatest industrial powerhouse.

But he was wrong in thinking that the solution was deregulation of the economy, particularly deregulation of financial and investment institutions which took place during his two terms. The result was enormous growth in the power and influence of Wall Street and the big banks over the rest of the economy. The era of leveraged mergers, acquisitions, and buyouts was the predecessor of the disaster of today with the unfolding fiasco of equity, hedge, and derivative funds in the process of collapse.

After Reagan came President George H.W. Bush. By the end of his term, the loss of manufacturing jobs had produced another recession. Within a couple of years of Bill Clinton’s election in 1992, action by Secretary of the Treasury Robert Rubin to strengthen the dollar attracted enough foreign investment to create the dot.com bubble.

Clinton then cut the federal budget enough by reducing federal employment that he was able to achieve a budget surplus. This lessened the drag on the economy from the national debt which Reagan had left behind from his tax cuts and trillion dollar military build-up. But the over-leveraged dot.com bubble burst with the stock market collapse of 2000, leaving us in recession again.

Enter President George W. Bush. Despite the “achievement” of Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan in creating another bubble—the housing one—big enough to float the U.S. economy for four consecutive years—2002 to 2005—the economic fundamentals today are horrendous. We are living in an economy that has begun to crash, with the Federal Reserve, the Treasury Department, and Congress cobbling together bail-outs of various descriptions which they hope will right what is obviously a sinking ship.

We can only hope they will succeed to some extent, because it would be heartless to wish disaster on the ones who suffer the most from the consequences of the greed and stupidity of people in power—namely the ordinary people who work for a living and who honestly try to raise their families and hold to a decent standard of living. But life is becoming very hard for the vast majority of Americans who have been bearing the brunt of our failed economic and monetary polices of the last three decades.
