Monitor U.S. military justice matter Papua Cases
WASHINGTON, — United States (U.S.) are being closely monitored the trial four military personnel accused of torturing two Papuans, a spokesman said U.S. State Department, Philip Crowley, on Thursday (13/01/2011).
"It is very important for Indonesia to reform its security forces and continue to maintain troops in a high standard, in terms of individual behavior and human rights," said Crowley. "We will monitor the case closely."
Three members of Battalion 753 AVT / Nabire Kodam XVII / Paradise, which consists of a non-commissioned officer and two enlisted, namely Irman Risqianto second Sergeant, Aug Yakson Private First Class, and Private First Class Mahanggiri Thamrin, were tried in Military Court III-9 Jayapura on Thursday. They were prosecuted after a video showing the torture of civilians in circulation in the online media last year. All three are accused of violating orders from superiors while on duty in the village of Gurage, District High Nambut, Puncak Jaya regency.
In a video posted on YouTube, the soldiers, among others, laid the wood stick that was burning to the genitals of a unarmed man as part of the way of interrogation to determine the location of weapons.
The government has promised to press the military abuses in areas such as Papua and Maluku islands. "We will continue to ask Indonesia to hold this commitment," said Crowley.
The three soldiers, if convicted, would face a maximum sentence of two and a half years in prison.
